Six floors of a 1936 building, from a quiet Deco Standard on the garden side to the penthouse under the parapet.
A 1936 building has thick walls, high ceilings and windows that open — three things nobody puts in a new hotel and everybody misses in one.
It also had, when we took it on, plumbing from the Muldoon years and a lift that made noises. Two years of work went into fixing what needed fixing and leaving alone what did not: the stair hall, the terrazzo landings, the pressed metal above the picture rails, and the original room proportions, which is why no two floors have quite the same layout.
Every room has blackout lining, heating and cooling you set yourself, a kettle, unmetered wireless, and a window that opens onto either the sea or the garden. There is no in-room minibar pricing, because there is no minibar — there is a fridge, and the shop across the parade is open until ten.

Tariffs are per night for two, GST paid, breakfast in. A festival tariff applies through February; two nights minimum on Deco Weekend.
Second and third floors on the garden side, away from the parade. No sea, but no traffic either, and the pines take the wind before it reaches the window. The rooms people book for a week rather than a weekend.

Third and fourth floors at the front, looking over the pines to the water. You hear the sea at night through an open sash, which is either the best thing about the room or the reason to ask for the garden side. Most booked grade in the house.

Fourth and fifth floors, front corners, with a balcony deep enough for two chairs and a pot of coffee. High enough to see past the pines to the whole sweep of the bay, from the port around to Cape Kidnappers on a clear morning.

Six of them, two per floor on levels three to five, facing north to Bluff Hill. A sitting room with a door that shuts, a table that seats four, and a bath as well as a shower. Families take these; so do people who work while they travel.

Three corner suites where the 1936 detailing survived intact — chevron plasterwork over the doors, the original leadlight in the bathroom, terrazzo underfoot. Windows on two elevations, sea one way and hill the other. Nothing here was restored, because nothing here needed it.

The whole sixth floor, behind the parapet: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a long room facing the water and a terrace of thirty-five square metres that nobody can see into. One booking at a time and a host assigned to it. The airport transfer comes with it.

We hold the room against a card and take nothing until you arrive, unless you have chosen an advance tariff, which is said plainly at the time of quoting.
Flexible tariffs cancel free until two days before arrival. Deco Weekend in February and the fortnight over Christmas need three weeks' notice. Beyond that we charge a night. If your flight into Napier is turned back — which happens in a southerly — telephone us and we will move things around rather than charge you.
Guests under 20 are welcome throughout the hotel, the restaurant, the pool and the event rooms. They cannot enter the Marine Room at any hour, and there is no discretion in that under the Gambling Act 2003.
The front desk answers within the day, and somebody picks up the telephone at any hour of the night.
