Cookie Policy

The four cookies this site sets, and how to refuse three of them

This site sets very few cookies, and the list below is all of them rather than a sample. Two are essential and cannot be turned off without breaking the site. The others only ever run if you agree to them. Last reviewed February 2026.

01 — What a cookie is

A small text file your browser stores when you visit a site, which the site can read back on the next page. It lets us remember, for example, that you have already answered the age question, so you are not asked again on every page.

02 — Essential cookies

These make the site work. They are set without asking, because without them there is no site to consent to.

  • om_age — records that you confirmed you are 20 or over, so the age check does not reappear on every page. Lasts 12 months. Contains the value 20 and nothing else.
  • om_cookie — records the choice you made in the cookie banner, so we honour it and stop asking. Lasts 12 months.

Neither identifies you. Neither is shared with anyone. If you block them, the age check and the cookie banner will appear on every page you open, which is tiresome but not harmful.

03 — Analytics cookies — only with your consent

Off unless you turn them on. They tell us which pages people read and for how long, so we know whether this site is any use. The data is aggregated and is never linked to your name, your booking or anything you do in The Beacon Room.

  • Which pages were opened, in what order, and for how long
  • Roughly where in the world the visit came from — country and region, not an address
  • Whether you are on a phone or a computer
  • Which site sent you here, if any

Typical lifetime: up to 24 months, and less for most of them.

04 — Marketing cookies — only with your consent

Also off unless you turn them on. These measure whether an advertisement we paid for actually brought anyone here, so we can stop paying for the ones that do not. They may be set by the advertising platform rather than by us.

We do not use them to build a picture of your gambling, and we do not advertise gaming to anyone who has self-excluded or to anyone under 20. See our host responsibility policy.

05 — What this site does not do

  • No cookie on this site can take a payment, and no card details are ever held in one
  • We do not use tracking pixels in the pages of this site
  • We do not embed social media widgets, which is why there are no like buttons anywhere on it
  • We do not sell or pass on anything a cookie collects
  • There is nothing playable on this site, so no cookie here relates to gaming activity of any kind

06 — Changing your mind

You can withdraw consent at any time and it takes effect immediately. There are two ways:

  • Clear this site's cookies in your browser and reload the page. The banner returns and you can choose again.
  • Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Every browser lets you do this per site: Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge all have it under Privacy.

If you refuse everything, the site works exactly as it does now. Nothing is withheld from you for saying no — refusing costs you nothing but the banner reappearing.

07 — Third parties

Pages on this site embed a link to a mapping service so you can open our address in it. Following that link takes you to another company's site, which will set its own cookies under its own policy, and we have no control over those. The map is a link rather than an embed precisely so that nothing loads until you choose it.

08 — Questions

Write to [email protected] and a person will answer. Cookies sit under the Privacy Act 2020 in New Zealand, and you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
