54 rooms, five categories, twenty-six facing the water
54 rooms in all. Twenty-six of them face east over Marine Parade to the beach; the rest look over the courtyard, the pool and the dune behind the house. The ocean-facing rooms cost more and are worth it in summer, when the sun comes up over the water at about ten to six. The courtyard rooms are quieter, and in a southerly they are considerably warmer.
Every rate is for two people and includes breakfast at Moturiki Kitchen, the lap pool, the gym, the wifi and parking. Rates move with the season: January and the school holidays are dearest, June and July the cheapest by some margin.
The smallest rooms in the house, on the first and second floors at the back, looking over the courtyard and the marram grass on the dune behind it. The surf is a sound rather than a view from here, which some people prefer.
East-facing, straight out over Marine Parade to the beach. These are the rooms people ask for by name the second time they stay. The windows open properly, on a stay, not on a 100 mm restrictor — and in summer the sun comes up over the water at about ten to six.
Corner rooms, named for the small island at the end of the beach that you can walk out to at low tide. Two aspects, so they hold the light from breakfast until the evening. A sofa bed takes a third guest without making the room feel full.
A separate sitting room with a door that shuts, which matters when one of you is working and the other is not. Second floor, ocean side, with the original 1938 window frames restored rather than replaced — we tried replacing two and put the old ones back.
Two of them, both on the top floor, both facing the beach. The terrace is 16 m² and it catches the morning rather than the evening, which is the right way round here. There is a reason we only have two.
Baths. Every category except the Dune Room has one. All thirty-eight bathrooms were rebuilt in 2019 — the tiles are the original pattern, re-cut, because the 1938 ones were laid on a floor that had to come up.
Cots and extra beds. A cot is free and there are eleven of them. A rollaway bed is NZ$55 a night and fits in the Moturiki Room, the Pilot Suite and the Oceanic Suite — not in a Dune or Ocean Room, where it would block the door.
Accessibility. Four rooms are step-free from the car park with a roll-in shower — two Ocean and two Moturiki. The lift reaches every floor. The Saltwater Bathhouse is step-free; the gym is down three steps and we are fixing that in 2027.
Quiet. The Dune Rooms on the second floor are the quietest in the house. Ask for one ending in 4 or 5 if you are a light sleeper — they are furthest from the lift.
Late arrival. Tell us and it is no trouble at all. Reception is staffed the whole twenty-four hours, and a cold plate can be left in the room if you are landing after the kitchen shuts.
Reservations are on +64 7 575 4186 between 7am and 8pm, seven days. They know which of the Ocean Rooms get the morning first, which Dune Room is quietest, and they will tell you if the room you are asking for is the wrong one for the trip you are describing.
Free up to 48 hours before 2pm on the day of arrival. Inside 48 hours we charge the first night. Over New Year and Easter it is seven days and a deposit of one night, taken at booking.
The Beacon Room at Oceanic Manor is reserved for adults aged 20 and over, in line with New Zealand law. The rest of the hotel — the rooms, Moturiki Kitchen and The Saltwater Bathhouse — welcomes guests of every age.
